Arthur, ‘French Soul – Oregon Soil’, Chardonnay from Dundee Hills
USA, Oregon, Dundee Hills, Domaine Drouhin Oregon, Arthur, Chardonnay, 2013

Introduction
The Drouhin family, with their roots in Burgundy in Beaune, have now been in Oregon since the late 80’s. After research over some years, in 1987 third generation Robert Drouhin bought land in Dundee Hills, with his children Véronique and Philippe at the wheel, producing their first DDO wine in 1988 from purchased grapes. The winery followed the year after.

Pinot Noir and Chardonnay were recognised as the most suitable for their estate in Dundee Hills, which is part of the Willamette Valley, northeast Oregon near Portland. There are AVA’s galore in this valley and Dundee Hills AVA is being seen as a major production area for quality. Their award winning white wine Arthur has been going since 1996. It is named after Veronique’s son and the first vintage was just 450 cases, from their 6 acres Chardonnay plot, with some partial oak aging in the process.

Wine specifics
Ready to drink, can keep for a few years. Fresh, balanced, hints of pear, fresh almond and mint. Serving white meat, all types of fish, soft cheeses. Obtained in the UK, online. Cork. Veronique wrote: ‘It is as if one brought together elements of a pure Chablis and an elegant Meursault’. DDO has a few more whites, reds and one rosé, all linked to Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.
Insights:
The estate is 124 acres. The Willamette Valley was ‘discovered’ as a wine growing region in the late 1960’s by David Lett, with his Eyrie Vineyard, where Veronique happen to work after completing her wine studies in 1986, as well as at a few other vineyards in the region. The region started with Chardonnay and Pinot Noir and that turned out to be just right. The Drouhin’s have a passion for Pinot Noir, which was one of the main reasons to set up in Oregon. AVA – American Viticultural Area.
