Viña Esmeralda
Moscatel de Alejandría, Gewürztraminer
145 Years of wine making by one family, representing Spanish wine to the full
Spain, Catalunya, Viña Esmeralda, Torres, DO, 2013
Introduction
The Torres family has been going since 1870 and is based near Villafranca del Penedès, Catalunya, with many vineyards west of Barcelona, producing a very wide variety of grapes and therefore wines. Considered the giant of Catalunya (and Spain) for making still wines, with Catalunya itself producing 95% of the Cava as well.
Penedès is the leading DO for still wines, however Catalunya DO is seen more commonly, due to the blending, however sanctions apply strongly, introduced in 1999. The Gewürztraminer for this wine is grown in the mountainous upper Penedès region. Award winning winery and this particular wine was rewarded Gold in Monaco 2013, by ‘Women and Wines of the World’.

Insights:
The Torres family also runs the Miguel Torres Chile winery in the Chilean Central Valley and in the United States, California, the Marimar Estate, founded in 1986 by Marimar Torres. The family is now in its 4th generation, lead by Miguel A. Torres, often recognised as a major player in wine industry and himself often winning awards. The winery was bombed during the Spanish civil war and rebuild in 1940, with its initial success in the US, as export to the rest of Europe was not possible during WW2. Member of Premium Familae Vini, Leading Wine Families (PFV). Torres also produces a range of brandies.
