Trout Valley
Pinot gris
New Zealand, elegant Pinot Gris from Nelson, on the northern tip of South Island
New Zealand, Nelson, Trout Valley, Pinot Gris, 2015
Introduction
The label of this Trout Valley features the trout fishing fly ‘sunset rabbit’ and is a Pinot Gris. The winery is based just west of the town of Nelson, naming the Nelson wine region, in Upper Moutere, part of the Moutere Hills, southwest coast of Tasman Bay.
Trout Valley Wines, especially made for the export market, is linked to Kahurangi Estate Wines, which has been around since the 1970’s and as of 1998 now owned by the Day family, in Nelson, who own Melness Wines as well, in Cust, in the north of the Canterbury wine region. The grapes for Trout Valley are sourced from seven contracted wine growers in Nelson, each with their own character. There is a small range of whites and one red, pinot noir; each label with their own fishing flies.

Insights:
The Nelson region holds three National Parks and neighbours Marlborough to the east and Canterbury southwards. Most of the vineyards are in the north of Nelson, in the Moutere Hills and Waimea Plains. Little or no influence from big (wine) companies. Wine is grown nearly throughout the whole of New Zealand, north to south, split up in 10 major wine regions, including Nelson. Early wine making goes back to the 1830’s, with British roots.
