Montagne Saint-Emilion
Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc
Saint-Emilion from one of the four ‘satellite’ villages
France, Bordeaux, Montagne Saint-Emilion, AC, 2014
Introduction
Montagne is one of four villages, just north of St. Emilion, that can connect its name to Saint-Emilion. The other 3 villages are Lussac, Puisseguin and St-Georges. Montagne only produces red wines, allowing other grapes from within the region and merlot is the main variety, supported by cabernet sauvignon and cabernet franc. This wine is bottled by GRM, ‘Modernité des Vins de Bordeaux’, an established merchant-owner.
Established in 1972 and founded by Jacques Guiraud, Jean Raymond and Marcel Marbot. GRM has grown substantially over the years, incl. owning 4 vineyards, exporting to 25 counties and now having strong ties in Spain since 2015. GRM is based in Pineuilh, east from Bordeaux. They try to achieve a balance between traditional wine making and look continuously at innovations/trends where possible.

Insights:
Montagne, on the right bank of the Dordogne, got its AOC status in 1936, specifying the wines from the commune of Montagne and the nearby hamlets of Parsac and Saint-Georges. Originally the satellite wines were sold as St. Emilion and in 1921 this was changed in court and the four had to use the hyphenated appellation name, becoming well respected and quality wines. Montagne is the largest of the 4 and has 220 growers, together producing around 775K cases annually.
