Enthusiastic wine makers’ Roussillon fresh red food wine
France, Roussillon, Côtes du Roussillon Villages, Mas de la Dona, Les Schistes Bruns, V. Baissas, AOC, 2017

Introduction
Vincent Baissas is the winegrower, family owned Châteaux Dona Baissas, dating back to 1817. Based in the communal area of Calce & Estagel, ca. 10-15 km west from the town of Perpignan, southern France, close to the Spanish border, i.e. the foothills of the Pyrenees. They produce AOC wines under Côtes du Roussillon Villages (this one), Rivesaltes and Muscat de Rivesaltes.

Côtes du Roussillon Villages is the northern sub-region/appellation within Roussillon, in the valley of and along the river Agly. Red wines only and are a step up, bolder, from the Côtes du Roussillon wines. A similar approach as Côtes du Rhône and their Villages varieties, also in its stricter regulations for blending of the permitted grape varieties.

Wine specifics
Ready to drink and can keep still for a while. Balanced, mature, fruity, hints of prunes and spice. Serving meats, roasts, pasta and (mature) cheeses. Grapes: Carignan, Mourvèdre, Syrah, Grenache. The blue cap, printed with Dona Baissas 1817 on the sides, has on the top the lady (is Dona in Catalan) in a long dress, which you see more on the wineries other labelling. On the label of this wine a drawing of the farmhouse among the mountains. Obtained in the UK. Cork.
Insights:
The slopes of this wine region are made up of schist, granite and limestone, forming an ideal soil condition for wine growing, combined with the good sunshine throughout the year. Baissas is a member of Vigneron Independant, as Cellier de la Dona. The Château also produces Vins Doux Naturels (VDN), a typical drink for the Languedoc-Roussillon region, a (natural) sweet apéritif, part fermented grape juice added with pure alcohol.
‘Mas de la Dona’ – Farmhouse of the Lady. Schistes bruns – brown shale.
