Carta Roja
Monastrell, Syrah
Made for the UK market, a crianza from Jumilla, south-east Spain
Spain, Jumilla, Carta Roja, Crianza, Monastrell Syrah, DOP, 2009
Introduction
Produced and bottled by Bodegas San Isidro, based in the town of Jumilla, giving the name to the wine region, spread over 2 provinces. Jumilla was one of the first areas to receive its official status, which was in 1966. Monastrell is the main grape variety for the area with 85% of the production and forms the basis for this wine. In Spain it is the third most widely planted grape, mostly along the Mediterranean. Other grape varieties are all set within the DOP.
Bodegas San Isidro – BSI was founded in 1936 by a group of wine growers, with currently 400+ members and is one the major producers in Jumilla. They have Monastrell vineyards that have survived phyloxera, are therefore completely original and these produce a wine called Pie Franco. Carta Roja was produced by their wine maker Inmaculada Perez for the UK.

Insights:
BSI grows a few other whites and reds, such as Syrah, Tempranillo and Petit Verdot; their production is 80% Monastrell. Within the labelling laws for red wines, Crianza means that the wine has been aged for 2 years, with at least 4 months in oak barrels. Reserva means aging at least for 2 years and 8 months in oak barrels. Gran Reserva is at least 4 years of which 12 months in an oak barrel and a minimum of 36 months in a bottle. For whites and rosé the periods vary a little. For the vintage year 85% of the wine used has to be from that year’s harvest.
