Bandol
Grenache, Cinsault, Mourvèdre
Classic, sought after French blush, not just for the hot day
France, Bandol, Lou Lisquet, AOC, 2016
Introduction
Bandol AOC, named after the small coastal fishing town of Bandol, lower section of The Province region, 15-20 kilometres west of the town of Toulon. This rosé is made by the Coopérative Des Vignerons de la Cadiérenne in the village of La Cadière d’Azur, a few kilometres just north of Bandol. It started in 1929 with 37 regional growers and now represents 294 members with 600 ha., making various regional wines, in a modern award winning operation and is the largest producer of Bandol AOC.
It produces also the wines Côtes de Provence AOC and Vins de Pays du Var IGP. The total count for the Bandol region is only ca. 1500 ha. (and no properties in Bandol itself), producing mostly Mourvèdre based reds, aged in oak barrels, representing 35% of the Bandol production, rosé’s making 60% and whites only 5%. Between the growers there is an agreement that quality is key. Rose’s are often typically nearly orange in colour.

Insights:
The winery produces their wines under their own label and for others, such as this one. The AOC is spread over 8 towns, around Bandol. Wine growing has been here since the 6th century BC, partially due to its coastal location and the Bandol harbour. It is an AOC since 1941. The slopes of the vineyards are like an amphitheatre, facing south towards to the sea, further blessed with its terroir and a lot of hours of sun. In the AOC they are ‘allowed’ to produce 40 hectolitres per ha, but as they are striving for this earlier mentioned quality, the growers set themselves a target for around 35 hectolitres. Chaptalisation (increasing alcohol by adding sugar) is not permitted under the AOC.
