Fruity Chardonnay by Hahn, California’s Monterey County, USA
USA, California, Monterey County AVA, Hahn, Chardonnay, 2016

Introduction
The winery was established with their first release in 1980 in Soledad, Santa Lucia Highlands, Monterey County in California, by Nicky and Gaby Hahn, 120 km south from the town of San Jose. The vineyard was only bought the year before, followed by others in years to come and these Highlands have a wine making history going back a few centuries.

Nicky Hahn, of Swiss origin, played a great role in the Santa Lucia Highlands to become an AVA – American Viticultural Area in 1991.The modern family owned winery, now run by their son Philip and Caroline Hahn, holds 650 acres of vineyards, with in SLH mainly Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The vineyards are ‘certified sustainable vineyards’. In 2007 they launched their brand Lucienne with 3 limited production single-vineyard Pinot Noirs.

Insights:
Hahn has 6 vineyards, all in Monterey County, 4 in Santa Lucia Highlands and 2 in nearby Arroyo Seco. Each has their own AVA. Monterey produces vast quantities of wine and where some of the estates are vast with thousands of ha. All their estates fall into the Salinas valley, which is well positioned in relation to Monterey Bay and its climate. The winery uses French oak barrels for its Chardonnay and during its aging process it is hand-stirred every 2 week to improve its qualities where possible. The four wine ranges they have are: Hahn (this one), Hahn Estate (from Arroyo Seco), Hahn SLH and Lucienne (from their SLH vineyards: Smith, Doctor’s and Lone Oak). Lucien is Nicky Hahn’s middle name.
