Lyngrove
Shiraz, Pinotage
A Cape’s ‘Golden Triangle’ red by Lyngrove, Stellenbosch
South Africa, Stellenbosch, Lyngrove Reserve, Shiraz Pinotage, WO, 2014
Introduction
Secluded and one hour drive east from Cape Town, 80 ha. of vineyards make up Lyngrove, between the towns of Stellenbosch and Somerset West. With great soil, sunshine and the cooling influence from the Atlantic at one side (False Bay), as well as having the Helderberg Mountains on the other. Depending on the grape type and the growing conditions, the harvests start late February into March. Within the vineyards they use drip irrigation.
At one time Stellenbosch was an area for Chenin Blanc, which is now completely overtaken by reds, such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz and Merlot and often blended. Nearby there are renowned wineries, such as Beyerskloof, Meerlust and Neethlingshof, just to mention a few. Lyngrove have 3 ranges of wines, the Reserve being one of them and they are scoring well with their Platinum range.

Insights:
Maturing for this wine takes place over a period of 18 months in a mix of older 300 litre barrels, made of French and American oak. The wines are being exported to an increasing number of countries, including the UK. Lyngrove promotes itself as ‘Wines and Guesthouse’. Drawing of the house shown on the plastic bottle capsule. They have 9 bedrooms and offer conference and function facilities, with colonial touches coming back in the decor and so on. Stellenbosch is often mentioned in one breath with neighbouring Paarl (just to the north) and Franschhoek (just to the east), equally producing lovely wines.
