Gewürztraminer
South Africa Elgin’s pioneer wine maker, a Gewürztraminer estate wine
South Africa, Elgin, Paul Cluver, Gewürztraminer, WO, 2016

Introduction
Family owned and run, Paul Cluver Wine Estate was established in 1896, in Grabouw. In general the wine industry in Elgin has only started at the turn of the 20th century and has now its own WO (wine of origin). The cooler Elgin region is traditionally known as an apple-growing area and is approximately 75 kilometres east from Cape Town.

The award winning winery produces a selection of whites, pinot noir, dessert wine and some spirits and produces around 20K cases (x12B) per year. Paul Cluver is part of a larger farming estate called ‘De Rust Estate’ and is situated within the Unesco World Heritage site, the Kogelberg Biosphere, known for its extensive plant diversity. Half of the estate is set for conservation. Sustainable farming is key and they are part of ‘Champion in Conservation’.

Wine specifics
Ready to drink and can keep for a little while. Fresh, light, fruity, citrus, hints of rose petals. Serving spicy foods, grilled seafoods, salads, on its own. Obtained in the UK. Corkscrew.
Insights:
The Gewürztraminer production is around 2K cases per year. Elgin is quite southern for wine growing, quite cold, but the even more southern Walker Bay and Cape Agulhas wine areas still go a step further and with some success. The Elgin harvest is among the latest on the Cape. Part of the estate is the forest amphitheatre, seating upto 600 people, hosting regularly a range of open air events.
