McGuigan, Black Label
Merlot
For years now, a reliable (south eastern) Australian wine maker
Australia, South Eastern Australia, McGuigan Black Label, Merlot, 2013
Introduction
Owen McGuigan settles in the Hunter Valley in 1880, New South Wales, and supplements his farming with vineyards. Over the period 1930-1950 the winery takes off under his son Perc McGuigan, full of character and following innovation, passing the skills over to his two sons. The brothers Brian, with his wife Fay and Neil are the driving force of the company as we know it now, with over 60 McGuigan wines.
They were in the forefront on exporting. In 1999 they expand into the Barossa Valley , their ‘second home’ and with the acquisition of Simeon Wines a few years later they become Australia’s fourth largest winery. In the meantime awards keep coming in and recently they have won the ISWC award ‘international wine maker of the year’ again! McGuigan produces also a Semillon white which they rate and are successful with, with Chardonnay leading the way in the Hunter region.

Insights:
The McGuigan winery is based in the Hunter subregion of Pokolbin, not far from the coastline, surrounded by numerous other vineyards. The Hunter is so popular due to its terroir, as well as its relative short distance from Sydney, for its tourism and investment potential. The Hunter wines may have been supported with some stronger from South Australia in the past, within the regulations, even though more and more effort is made to avoid this and get a more pure representation of the Hunter wines. The McGuigan wines for the UK market are mostly bottled in Cheshire, UK.
