Kalander
Shiraz, Cinsault, Mourvèdre
Swartland, South Africa, well crafted blend by Adi Badenhorst
South Africa, Swartland, Kalander, WO, 2013
Introduction
The wine is named after the daughter of Adi Badenhorst; Kalander is also the name for a local beetle found in the vineyards. Wine growing goes back to his grandfather and getting involved in wines from a young age, followed by training, stages and jobs around the world, incl. several in South Africa.
Adi bought a property together with his cousin Hein in 2008. The name of the vineyard is Kalmoesfontein, was unused and not producing at the time of the purchase. It is in Swartland, 60 ha. on the slopes of the Perdeberg mountain, ca. 15 kilometres south west of the town of Malmesbury (100 kilometres north of Cape Town). The process is one of biological farming and making award winning wines, whilst respecting traditional methods. Experiments with wines are a regular practice, including e.g. not irrigating certain plots.

Insights:
The vineyard produces also wines under the AA Badenhorst label, blends and single varieties, red and whites. Furthermore a ‘second tier’, called Secateurs. Swartland was at one time perceived as an area of ‘ordinary stuff’, but it is a wine area on the move, due to an increase in (quality) wine production in the country, as well as new influences, e.g. with the arrival of new growers. In addition to their wines, Adi and Hein also produce tonic and Caperitif, while the grapes in their vineyards ‘look after themselves’. The latter is a Chenin Blanc fortified with spirit, gently sweetened by the sugar of the grapes, bittered by quinchona bark and flavoured with some 35 Cape ingredients, such as ‘fynbos, kalmoes and naartjies’.
