Gnarly Head
Chardonnay
The ‘gnarly’ shape of the old vines made the name of this wine
USA, California, Gnarly Head, Chardonnay, 2011

Introduction
Delicato is the company behind this wine and is based in Manteca, San Joaquin County, 70 miles east from San Francisco. The Gnarly brand started with an Old Vine Zinfandel and has moved into other varieties since. Delicato Family Vineyards was founded in 1924 and, now with three generations of Californian winemaking, is owned by the Indelicato family, with a mixture of traditions, modern influences and their roots in Sicily, Italy.

Three main vineyards are the foundation of the company’s wines, in Lodi, Monterey County and the Nappa Valley. With 15+ Brands, they export a large portion of their wines all over the world, through an extensive network. In addition to their own estates, they have long running contracts with other wine growers and Gnarly Head is based on one of these co-operations. The (Ken) Kramer Vineyard in Lodi gets a special mention in relation to the naming of the brand.

Insights:
The family is extending its (luxury) portfolio continuously and recently acquired the Blossom Hill Winery (to be called Alba Coast Winery) from Treasury Wine Estates, Paicines AVA, in San Benito County, as well as investing in a winery in Sonoma, the V2 Wine Group. The fourth generation of the family is already on the move within the business. The Delicato tasting room in Manteca holds a variety of annual events, such as a fine art exhibition and a photography show, among the more wine related wine events.
