Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz
Not a former prime minister or insurance, just a fine Portuguese wine.
Portugal, Douro DOC, Churchill’s Estates, 2012

Introduction
With eventually a combined business of producing port and table wine, the company was founded in 1981 by John Graham, a new British company, surrounded by many producers who have been around hundreds of years. Using the name from his wife, Caroline Churchill, it has been producing quality port and in 2004 it extended its portfolio with fine wines.

Currently, the vineyard produces 1 white and 4 four reds, Douro wines, using traditional grape varieties by Churchill Graham Ltd., with an exclusive distribution network around the world. Douro gets its name from the river that runs through the middle of the region, with the vineyard just east from the town of Pinhão, approx. 100km inland from the town of Porto.

Insights:
In 1999 they bought their vineyard, Quinta da Gricha, on the southbank of the River Douro, in the prestigious Cima Corga sub-region. The winery produces a few other, well respected wines, under different labelling. All their ports are produced there, in traditional granite ‘lagarres’ or treading tanks built in 1852. Traditionally the Douro Valley is being seen as the home of port, but fine wines have now come in to it as well and the area was revived by a major World Bank investment in the 80’s, enabling a complete overhaul of its production, putting Douro back on the map.
