Hungary, Tokaji, Chateau Dereszla, Furmint Dry, 2013
Introduction
Chateau Dereszla has been going for a very long time, traditional Hungarian, with first notes about it going back to the early 15th century. Over the centuries it had its share in battles, ownership changes, second world war, communist era and neglect. Eventually the Patrick D’Aulan family from Champagne took hold of the ‘pincészet’ (winery) in 2000. They are the former owners of Piper Heidsieck, seeing its potential and who also have interests in Bordeaux and Argentina.
The alterations and upgrades took till 2007 and it keeps going with the times, in some cases aided under European Union schemes. The 15 spread out prime vineyards bring their wines to Bodrogkeresztür, where the winery is based. The grapes for the Furmint dry are picked earlier than the ones for the sweet wine versions and are blended with 15% Hárslevelű and Yellow Muscat grapes. 70% of grapes grown in Tokaji are Furmint.

Insights:
Hungary is obviously known for its sweet wine, the Tokaji, northeast Hungary, close to the Slovakian border. Chateau Dereszla awards winning selection includes various white wines, as well as Late Harvest, a variety of Aszú (3,5,6 and 7 puttonyos) and Eszencia (2000). The puttonyos grade the sugar content of the sweet wines, with Eszencia going even higher and usually only produced in exceptional years, such as 2000. Furmint is ideal for the noble rot process (Botrytis Cinerea).
