Apothic
Zinfandel, Merlot, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon
A blend of Californian grapes, with its name referring to the latin word for blending and storing apotheca; in ancient Greek apothēkē
USA, California, Apothic, Red, Winemaker’s Blend, 2013
Introduction
Based in Modesto, the wine maker Debbie Juergenson combines the various grapes, year to year, creating the best blend every year. The Apothic range holds a few variations; Red, White, Dark, Crush and some limited seasonal releases.
Apothic is part of E&J Gallo Winery, California, the world’s largest family-owned winery and largest exporter of Californian wines. This wine is a blend of a minimum of 4 varietals, not linking it to e.g. a vineyard, classifying under California. The wine is seen as controversial, ‘put together’ and considered by many as sweet; sweeter than the ‘usual’ (dry) reds. This will have been achieved by adding grape juice concentrate in the blending stage, ultimately aiming for a certain consumer market and palate.

Insights:
Apothic Red contains 16.4 grams per litre of residual sugars. Reds classified as dry tend to have only up to a few grams of residual sugar, which is often also regulated. The wine is seen by some as an option, a stepping stone, to drink red wine. Opinions vary strongly around this wine, even though it is widely considered as pleasant and tasty, when not ‘noticing’ or knowing about the sugar content.
