Saumur Champigny
Cabernet Franc
Not what you expect, a good red from a Loire region
France, Saumur Champigny, AC, Domaine Lavigne, 2010
Introduction
Saumur Champigny by Domaine Lavigne from the small village of Varrains, just under the town of Saumur, by Antoine Veron. Gilbert Lavigne’s family and son-in-law Antoine Veron treat the vineyards land and environment with great respect, as best as they can. 36 Hectares of vines with ¾ for Saumur Champigny and the rest for Saumur (white and rosé).
Saumur Champigny comes from 100% Cabernet Franc and it is being considered by many as one of the most refreshing Cabernet Franc’s in the country. At one time the Saumur was only known for its sparkling versions of wine, made in the traditional method. The red Saumur Champigny is not often on the UK shelves and is mostly drunk in France.

Insights:
The Loire Valley holds a wide variety of wines along France’s longest river, which is just over 1000 kilometres long. All Loire wines are often light and refreshing and well over half of them are white, each wine region with its own characteristics, from dry to sweet. Some of these wines are Muscadet, Saumur, Vouvray, Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumée, just to mention a few. For white the basis is often Chenin Blanc and for the reds Cabernet Franc, like the Saumur Champigny. So, when you see it, give it a try!
