Rawson’s Retreat
Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon
With these days only a small mention of a link to Penfolds, a brand that can stand on its own
Australia, Barossa Valley (South Eastern Australia), Rawson’s Retreat, Shiraz Cabernet, 2013

Introduction
Rawson’s Retreat was originally the nick name for the family home, ‘Grange Cottage’, of Dr. Christopher Rawson Penfold, in Magill, close to the eastern outskirts of Adelaide. Settled in 1844 in Magill from England, started his first vineyard, build the ‘Cottage’ a year later and is one of the oldest wineries in Australia.

Through the years there has been a strong family influence and since 2011 Penfolds is part of Treasury Wine Estates, based in Melbourne and, apart from various estates around South Australia, it has 2 wineries, one at the Magill estate and one in the Barossa Valley, in Nuriootpa. The latter produces Rawson’s Retreat.

Wine specifics
Ready to drink and can still keep for a while. Fruity, full-bodied, balanced, pleasant aftertaste. Serving; on its own, meat dishes, pasta and hard cheeses. Bottle obtained in the UK. The Penfolds name used to be on the front of the bottle and has moved now to the back label. Obtained in the UK. Screwtop.
Insights:
The Barossa Valley is dominated by large companies, involved in the making of wines. Penfolds started in this valley in 1911, using grapes from the area and beyond. Rawson Retreat should perhaps be seen on its own, with its competitive and affordable price level. If you do link it with Penfolds, maybe experience and approach it as an entry level to Penfolds. The Penfolds range is extensive and represents Australia to the full with its wines. Prices will be different.
