Rebula
Another surprising wine, Rebula grape, from Slovenia’s Vinska Klet Gorišcka Brda
Slovenia, Krasno, Sauvignon Blanc, Ribolla Gialla, Gorišcka Brda, 2016

Introduction
Krasno is produced by Vinska Klet Gorišcka Brda, who has been around since 1957. ‘Devoted to Rebula’ is part of their logo and this wine is a blend of Sauvignon Blanc and (Rebula) Ribolla Gialla. The western side of Slovenia is the Primorska wine growing region, of which Gorišcka Brda is a small part, close to the Italian border. Slovenian wine history goes back to 300 BC, expanding under the Romans and it has been there since.

Brda is a community. ‘Gorišcka Brda’ name also stands for the cooperation Wine Cellar, with more than 400 families still forming the cooperation. These families grow vines, as well as often cherries and olives. Due to the circumstances of the vineyards all work has to be done manually. Krasno is the name for one of their wine ranges, named after a nearby small village of around 80 inhabitants, producing other brands such as Villa Brici and Quercus, as well as a sparkling range.

Serving poultry, fish, salads, various spicy dishes, on its own. Obtained in the UK. Screwtop. Trendy and attractive label, showing Krasno’s church, the long road to the village and the river, together with its landscape.
Insights:
The Rebula grape is important to this winery and the first mention of Rebula in Slovenia dates to 1336. In north Italy the grape is called Ribolla Gialla. The Brda region had its problems with phylloxera (grape louse) in the 1870’s and grafting became common practice here as well. 25% of the wine production in Gorišcka is the Rebula. Slovenia produces more white than red; not much is exported, but it is increasing.
