Buzet
Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon
One cooperative (largely) for the whole Buzet AOC, spread over 27 communes, southwest France
France, Buzet, Comté de Choisy, AC, 2014

Introduction
Les Vignerons de Buzet is the name of the cooperative, based in Buzet sur Baise, with this region running along the river Garonne, near the town of Agen, still in the wonderful department of Lot-et-Garonne. The cooperative started in 1953. The Buzet wines were then a VDQS and Buzet got its AOC in 1973, initially under the name of Côtes de Buzet and since 1986 just as Buzet. These days there are 198 growers in the cooperative.

This cooperative has been of great influence to the development of the wines of Buzet and over the last 10 year sustainability has been at the forefront of all their actions and policies. Since 2006 they started with an experimental winery, for research and development, as well as a training centre, e.g. for the young hotel school students. This research and innovation goes especially very far in their 76 hectares estate, Château de Gueyze.

Insights:
Their slogan: ‘Une viticulture respectueuse de l’Homme et de la Nature’ (wine growing with respect for man and nature). The wine selection of the cooperation is extensive and includes vegan wines. This is a direction they follow more since 2016, with the ‘Vins Nature’ range. The winery is quite a tourist attraction in the area, attracting over hundred thousand visitors every year, with a variety of programmes throughout the year. This particular product/brand is linked to Carrefour, a large supermarket chain in France. VDQS – Vin Délimité de Qualité Supérieure; till 2011 a classification just below the AOC and above the Vin de Pays. Most VDQS were able to move into AOC, whilst upping their game (or becoming a Vin de Pays).
