Baie Dankie
Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot
‘Thank you so much’ – ‘Baie Dankie’, red blend Western Cape
South Africa, Western Cape, Baie Dankie, WO, 2015
Introduction
Western Cape, South Africa and a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot. This particular wine has been bottled in the Netherlands for a number of wine-supermarket type outlets. The Dutch town of Oosterhout is the place for bottling, formerly owned by Dirkzwager and these days by Avandis, one of Europe’s largest and most modern producers of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drink.
Avandis is a co-operation between three firms, each with a long history in their field. They are Herman Janssen Beverages (since 1777), Lucas Bols (since 1575) and De Kuyper Royal distillers (since 1695). Their production of products covers gins, jenevers, liqueurs, advocaat, rums, whiskey’s and so on, and whilst bottling for themselves, they bottle as well as for third parties and cover their distribution.

Wine specifics
Ready to drink and can keep still for a little while. Soft, pleasant, ripe fruity, hints of mocca and cherries. Serving grills, red meat, sausage, cheese, just on its own. Obtained in the Netherlands, may not be available in the UK. The label shows a handshake with some vines, both an expression of ‘thank you’. The label says: a wine to enjoy and to give (serve and/or give away). Screwtop.

Insights:
The South African wine industry goes back to 1652, when the first Europeans settled. Since the end of Apartheid the industry has grown, with Western Cape being a thriving wine growing area, with regions like Stellenbosch and Paarl. Baie Dankie has been presented in a number of ways, different blends and basic, different labelling, such as the use of a Reebok, as well as bag-in-box. In general an easy wine and value for money.
