Portuguese meaty red, ‘850’, from the Douro region
Portugal, 850, Vinho Regional Duriense, 2014

Introduction
Under the seal of Vinho Regional Duriense a red wine from Sogevinus Fine Wines, based in Vila Nova de Gaia, just across the river from the town of Porto. Originally founded in 1912. This producer covers ports as well as a wide selection of well represented international branded wines. Their port houses are Kopke, Cálem, Burmeister and Barros, all housed in Vila Nova de Gaia, visible from and along the river.

Vinho Regional (VR) Duriense stands for Douro wines that do not classify for the higher DOC status and can be compared to table wines, in this case still from a certain region. ‘850 Tinto’ refers its name to the length of the Douro river, 850 kilometres. The Douro region itself is east from the town of Porto, from 150 kilometres inland upto the Spanish border, along the river. Blending of wines is common and the Portuguese use still a lot of their local grape varieties.

Insights:
The Douro region has still twenty five thousand farmers involved in growing wines, looking after 45.000 hectares of vineyards. Douro is obviously most known for its ports, but the still wines are more and more been taken serious. The region has benefited from extensive funds, opening it up, as well as improve cultivation and production. The river goes well into Spain and seems to have an exact length of 897 kilometres, with an amazing height difference from Spain to Porto, which these days is controlled by 15 dams and locks. A trip on the river is an adventure by itself!
