Weinzierl
Blauer Zweigelt
A red from the most important and versatile grape in Austria, Blauer Zweigelt
Austria, Niederösterreich, Weinzierl, Blauer Zweigelt, Trocken, Qualitätswein, 2013
Introduction
Bottled by Winzer Krems, one of the main producers and exporters, owned by 981 winegrowers, growing their wines in Kremstal and surrounding wine regions. Krems is 45 miles west of Vienna, on the river Danube. A combination of slopes and mild weather, an ideal valley for wine growers, with nearby more known wine region Wachau.
Grapes have been grown in Kremstal for over 2000 years and the cooperative was founded in 1938, slowly developing into a major player. They grow a variety of grapes, often white, with Grüner Veltliner and Riesling as the main ones. 9 Regional wine committees award the DAC classifications, mostly around the last 2 mentioned grape varietals, Kremstal being one of these regions, which grows more red than other regions.

Insights:
The label shows the coat of arms of the town of Krems and the former village of Weinzierl is a section of the town. The wine is described as trocken – dry and a qualitätswein, which stands for a classification of wine, for white and red, based on the Austrian Wine Law of 2009, Districtus Austria Controllatus (DAC), similar to the French and Italian systems. Winzer Krems has on site an extensive permanent wine related exhibition, seen as a major attraction in the area.
