Valcanto
Monastrell
Juicy Spanish Monastrell from Almansa DO; to the French it is the mourvèdre grape
Spain, Almansa, Valcanto, Monastrell, Bodegas Piqueras, 2013
Introduction
Bodegas Piqueras is the winery based in the town of Almansa, which also gives the name to the wine region. Almansa, together with other neighbouring wine regions in south-east Spain, have for long been seen as bulk wine producers. Over the more recent years some wine makers/regions produce individual wines of quality. This applies to e.g. to the regions of Almansa, Valencia, Jumilla and Utiel-Requena.
Bodegas Piqueras was founded in 1915 by Luis Piqueras López and the family owned winery has come a long way since, now fully equipped and into the fourth generation, with a good selection and award winning wines. Traditions and values are mixed well with the modern wine making facilities. They have a range of vines as well which are sixty years old, particularly for the Monastrell and the Garnacha Tintorera grape varieties. The winery has substantial vineyards of their own, as well as contracts with other growers.

Insights:
The Valcanto Monastrell is aged for 6 months in 100% French fine grain oak barrels of 300 litres. The DO classification was awarded in 1964 and currently applies to 12 wineries in the region, representing 750 winegrowers, mostly situated in and around 8 regional towns, including Almansa. The location, the temperature throughout the year and being close to the Mediterranean work well for the vines. (DO – Denominación de Origin)
