Tonneau de la Guille
Gamay
Côteaux de Lyonnais AOP, an overlooked bit of French wine country
France, Côteaux du Lyonnais, Tonneau de la Guille, AOP, 2016
Introduction
Since 1984 quite a small AOP, just on the hillsides west of Lyon, the Monts du Lyonnais. ‘Loosely’ between the towns of L’Arbresle in the north and Brignais in the south. It is a standalone wine region and not linked to any of the major nearby regions, with 370 ha. of wines and 49 wine growing communes. The grape for the reds is Gamay and for the whites Chardonnay and some Aligoté, with most of these wines for the French market.
This award winning red is made by L’Union Signé Vignerons, a cooperation since 2012 between 3 wineries to improve their total performances and this one is bottled in the commune of San Bien, just south from L’Arbresle. It is not just Lyonnais, they also represent Beaujolais to the north and Côtes du Forez to the east, with over 500 wine growers in 95 communes in these three wine regions, mostly concentrating around the Gamay grape. Serious efforts are made by them to export their wines.

Insights:
La Guille is a loose reference and tribute to the district of the Lyon ‘Quartier de la Guillotière’; these days the area has a social and ethnic mix. ‘A wine-men-barrel of the Guille’. Côtes du Forez is Loire’s most southern wine region, still along the 1000 kilometres long river and bordering on the Lyonnais region. The Loire River starts in the Massif Central, ca. 100 km’s south of Saint-Étienne, central France, working its way via Orleans to Nantes on the French west coast. The 3 wineries are: Cave de Bully-Quincié in Beaujolais, Cave des Vignerons Foréziens and Cave des Côteaux du Lyonnais (in San Bien).
It seems that ‘La Guille’ may also refer to the oak upper part of the barrel, where they tap the wine from, according to ‘Le Guide Hachette des Vins’.
