Tavel
Grenache, Cinsault
A historic, well known rosé from the southern Rhône area, the dark-pink Tavel AOC
France, Rhône, Tavel, AC, La Cave d’Augustin Florent, 2016

Introduction
The town of Tavel names this wine region, just northwest from the town of Avignon, just across the Rhône River from Châteauneuf-du-Pape. It received its AOC status in 1936, when the classification started and well before that, it was considered a wine for kings, incl. Louis XIV. This region produces only rosé wine, fresh to drink, but can be stored still for a little while, unlike most rosé’s.

This rosé tends to be a blend of various grape varieties, with Grenache and Cinsault often the basis. Others are Syrah and Mourvèdre, all within certain proportions, as regulated in the AOC. This particular wine is made under a private label by Les Vignerons de Tavel for the French supermarket chain Carrefour. Under the name of La Cave d’Augustin Florent, this brand covers a range of French regional wines, wanting to ensure quality, regional specific and representative characters of each wine.

Insights:
Legally French rosé wines have to be made by blending red and whites grapes before fermentation, pressed in order to extract some colour from the skins. Pressings may vary and there may be some blending of the lighter and darker musts to produce the Tavel, making the wine this way as well more powerful, more tannic and darker than other rosé’s. The wine is limited on 13.5% alcohol for the appellation. Only in Champagne red and white wine can be blended to create a rosé version. Just north, next to Tavel, is another well known rosé region, Lirac.
