Saumur
Cabernet Franc
Not the sparkling Crémant; a Saumur red from Loire region in France!
France, Loire, Saumur, Domaine de la Chenardière, AOC, 2015
Introduction
Saumur’s name is very much linked to the sparkling version(s) of the region, Crémant de Loire AOC, but the still red Saumur is on the move, in quantity and quality. Domaine de la Chenardière, linked to Les Caves de la Loire and Régis Alcocer, is our red Saumur, Val de Loire. The Caves facilitate a substantial number of wine makers of the region, as well as producing their own and are based in Brissac-Quincey, outside the Saumur region.
This red wine is traceable to the Fierbois vineyards around the small commune of Les Verchers sur Layon, along the river Layon, which is a tributary of the mighty Loire, just within the west side of the Saumur wine area. The reds are based on the Cabernet France grape (most of the white Saumur’s are made of Chenin Blanc). The vineyards in the area produce these days’ better wines through better practices, aided further by the ongoing climate-change.

Insights:
As said, the region is most known for its sparkling wine, made the traditional way and is therefore called a Crémant. Within the Saumur we have also the AOC of Saumur-Champigny, a wine area that is developing into a noticeable reputation of wines, including red. The town of Saumur is right on the river Loire, which is France’s longest river, with over 1000 kilometres. Crémants come back in other wine regions of France as well, such as burgundy.
