La Cavette
Tannat, Cabernet Franc
Madiran is the AOC, a great little wine region in south-west France
France, Madiran, La Cavette, Du Domaine de Grabiéou, Madiran AOC, 2014
Introduction
La Cavette is from Domaine de Grabiéou, based in the commune of Maumusson Laguain, in the northern part of the Madiran AOC, which was awarded in 1948. Named after the village of Madiran, the region is about 30 kilometres north-east from Pau. The Tannat grape sets the tone and, as so often, forms the basis for a great wine. This one is a blend of Tannat and some Cabernet Franc and is the entry level in their reds.
The Madiran AOC covers only reds; the whites have their own AOC, Pacherenc du Vic-Belh, for sweet and dry. The owners René and Frédéric Dessans have an estate of approx. 25 ha., which was replanted in the 1960-70’s. Since then they have produced most of their wines under their own labels, estate bottled, making whites and reds, under the two AOC’s, as well as the more generic Côtes de Gascogne.

Insights:
The winery ages this award winning wine for at least 24 months, before bottling, which often is the case with Tannat to get to its best. The winery is part of Vigneron Indépendant. Madiran is at times made from 100% Tannat grapes, but if blended, it is with Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinenc (FerServadou). Even though you see Madiran a bit more these days, wines from this corner of France are not well known. The exceptions may be the regions of Cahors, Jurançon and perhaps Gaillac.
