Karri Oak
Shiraz
Shiraz, Western Australia, Ferngrove and China
Australia, Western Australia, Karri Oak Estate, Wine of Australia, Shiraz, 2013
Introduction
The winery is Ferngrove, in vast Western Australia, based in a wine area called Frankland River. The first wines on this side of Australia date back to the 1830’s in the Perth area. The various districts south of Perth came in the late 60’s, all in all stretching from Perth to Albany, along the Limestone coast. This very small region of Australia, just the tip really on the south-west side, is mostly known for the wines from Margaret River.
The Frankland River wine industry is quite young, starting to develop more in the 1990’s. Initially it was heavily supported by tax incentives, as part of what is called the Great Southern Wine Region, a wine region with ideal growing conditions. The quite remote Ferngrove Vineyards started in 1998, now the largest operation in this area, approx. 90 kilometres inland from the coast. Since 2011 it is controlled by the Chinese company Pegasus, a manufacturing and food business, owned by businessman Mr. Xingfa Ma, who has also currently 60 Ferngrove shops in China.

Insights:
As the Chinese have an increased taste for wines from abroad, the Chinese themselves invest more around the world in the wine industry and import some or all of it back to their country. Ferngrove is a prime example, who before relied on the traditional domestic and export markets, which had slowed down over the years due to competition. Since changing their sight on China they have completely changed their fortune, whilst still keeping in touch with traditional markets. Mr. Ma bought in 2010 first a batch of wine from Ferngrove, just to see how it would be received in China. Being successful, soon after, he got involved with Ferngrove. Karri Oak trees grow in the Karri forest in south-west Australia, are quite small and grow in the understorey of the forest.
