Faugères
Syrah, Grenache, Mourvèdre, Carignan
Well made Faugères AOC red, eastern Languedoc, named Mas Olivier
France, Faugères, Mas Olivier, Faugères AOC, 2016
Introduction
The award winning Les Crus Faugères is the winery in the village of Faugères that makes the Mas Olivier. A few winegrowers started the cooperative in 1959 with an ambition to produce quality wine and a strong brand. The coop now owns more than 55% of the Faugères named wines. This region is ca. 20 kilometres north of the town of Béziers.
The region did not really make wines till early 19th century and then made grape juice mainly into a spirit, eau de vie. In 1955 it was recognised as a wine region of around 1800 ha., initially as a VDQS and in 1982 as an AOC, for red (which is 80% of the production) and rosé. The white followed later in 2005. The ground conditions of almost only schist sets the tone for the character of the wines, further combined with the favourable altitude, sun and its location towards the Mediterranean.

Insights:
40% Of the blend of this award winning red is oak aged for 6-8 months. The label states ‘Élevé en Barriques’.It is a name for cask or barrel and traditionally they hold 225 litres (or 59 gallons). It is the most commonly used type for wine making. There are bigger barrels. The bigger the barrels, the lesser the oak will have an influence on the wine. In 2003 the winery’s production became biological. The Mas Olivier brand is slowly but surely finding its way around the world.
