Duc de Termes
Tannat, Pinenc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc
Fruity Saint Mont AOC red from the well respected regional Plaimont Producteurs
France, Saint Mont, Duc de Termes, Saint Mont AOC, Edition Limitée, 2013
Introduction
In south-west France this former VDQS wine region became an AOC in 2011, named after the village. It is in the western part of the Gers department and the AOC vineyards stretch ‘only’ 785 ha in total. This handpicked wine is made by Plaimont Producteur, ‘Vignerons en Gascogne & Terroirs Pyrénees’, based in Saint-Mont, 40 kilometers north of Pau. The name refers to a nowadays tourist attraction, La Tours de Termes, a 13th century old castle overlooking the Adour valley and with the Pyrenees in the distance.
46 Communes make the Saint Mont AOC. It is home to the first vineyard listed in 2012 as a Historical Monument. In 2002 it established the first private collection for the preservation and exploration of original grape varieties in France, an initiative driven by Plaimont. These old parcels of vineyards now hold varieties that were practically lost or forgotten. Plaimont’s origins were based on distilling and producing Armagnac. In 1979 three cooperatives got together, from the villages of Plaisance, Aignan and St. Mont, to produce their own wine. The name of Plaimont stems from the initials and later 2 other cooperatives joined.
