Cannonau di Sardegna
Grenache
Grenache from Sardinia, with a wine growing history going back to Roman times
Italy, Sardinia, Cannonau di Sardegna, DOC, Sella & Mosca, 2008

Introduction
In the north west of the island, in the Alghero region, the wine is produced by Vigneti Sella & Mosca, who have been producing wine since 1899. Known for producing wines from estate-grown grapes, the estate is one of the largest wine estates in Europe. This wine is solely made from Grenache grapes, with its own DOC, Cannonau di Sardegna and this DOC covers the whole island.

The original founders of Sella & Mosca, the names of the two men, had a great interest in Egyptology and this is where the winery’s brand-logo is coming from. It shows a wine pressing scene in ancient Egyptian times, five men pressing wine, using sticks. Has the Grenache been imported from Spain, in the 14th century, by the Spanish? There are recent suggestions that the grape variety may even originate from the island!

Insights:
Sardinia has for many years supplied the mainland with reds for blending, such as Chianti. There is a trend to produce more dry reds, instead of sweet ones. A number of wines and wineries, white and red, are coming through under their own flag. Under the four centuries of Spanish occupation, upto 1708, many vines came from Spain. Cannonau is the main red grape on the island, as is the Vermentino grape for the whites. Aging of the Cannonau is in oak barrels for at least one year and for Cannonau Reserva it is a minimum of 2 years.
