Spain, La Mancha, Campo Bio, Tempranillo/Syrah, DO, 2014

Introduction
Headed by the three Parra brothers the winery Bodegas Parra Jiminez Irjimpa, in the small commune of Las Mesas in the Cuenca district, has been producing award winning organic wines for around 20 years. In 2012 they were certified for 150 hectares of vineyards, as part of their extensive agricultural estate, which also includes a large sheep herd.

La Mancha, central Spain, is Spain’s largest wine region, with half of it DO-classified and these DO’s cover more ground than all of Australia’s vineyards put together. The EU organic certification is visualised on the bottle’s back label with the ‘Euro leaf’, symbolising the EU stars/nations (stars like on the European flag) and Nature. For processed products it means that 95% of the agricultural ingredients are organic, as stated in the EU regulations.

Insights:
The 3 brothers, Francisco, Javier and Luis started in 1993 with Parra Family Organic, in a way continuing the family farming tradition, which always had been about sustainability. Organic farming was quite new then, as well as getting certified for it. Now they praise themselves to be the largest organic winery in Europe, selling around 4 million bottles a year. They also produce a sulphite free wine, Cuesta Colará, named after the vineyard and they have a strong opinion on sulphite free wines.

According to the brothers: ‘’There is a saying that to make great wine you must torture the grapes. If that is so, then La Mancha is an ideal place to make wine. Days are hot, imparting sweetness to the fruit. Nights are cold, giving the fruit the bracing acidity it needs to produce lively wine. Rainfall is almost nonexistent, allowing the vines to grow grapes concentrated in flavor.’’
