Alvi’s Drift
Shiraz
Worcester WO, South Africa and an elegant Shiraz
South Africa, Breede River Valley, Worcester, WO, Alvi’s Drift, Shiraz, Signature Range, 2015

Introduction
The Breede River Valley, of which Worcester is part of, produces more wine than any other in the Cape region. It is more than one quarter, making brandy and some good wines. The large winery is owned by the Van Der Merwe family, Bertie and his 2 sons, Johan and Alvi.

The wine name comes from the drift (in South African a ford), near the farm, built by granddad in 1928, crossing the Breede river.

It started as a diversification to the dairy and pig farm (Alfalfa), a 7000 ha estate, 120 km east from Cape Town and is based near the town of Worcester. The wine initially went to a variety of clients and eventually they started to produce their own brand. For Alvi himself it started somewhat as a hobby and it went from there, with success.

Now it is 410 ha and 19 different varieties, including Chenin Blanc and Pinotage. There is a Signature range, Reserve and Ultra Premium (the latter, incl. Albertus Viljoen brand).

Insights:
This Shiraz is, after open fermentation of 10 days, matured for 8 months in French and Amercan oak barrels. Worcester, as well as other wine areas in the Breede River Valley, irrigation is necessary, due to hot temperatures and dry.

In general Worcester wines are mostly produced by several large cooperatives. As a wine region Breede River Valley holds 3 Districts (sub-regions), Worcester, Robertson and Breedekloof. In this case it is further split up into another 15 ‘Wards’.
