Shiraz
Wine driven by enthusiasm and character
Australia, McPherson Family Vineyards, Shiraz, 2014
Introduction
Andrew McPherson Shiraz, under the Family Series, is one of 16 in the series, with various other branded wines on offer, specifically Basilisk and Chapter 3. They are keen to offer ‘high quality at an affordable price’. The winery has been going since 1968 and Andrew picked up his interest in wine making from his father Jock McPherson, with his own sons involved in the wine industry as well.
In 1993 Croftwood Vineyards was established in Murray Darling, near Mildura, expanding a little later into the more southern region of Goulburn Valley with the larger Sinclair Vineyard. In 2000 they opened a large bottling plant near the town of Nagambie in Central Victoria, bottling their own, as well as offering the service to other wineries in the Victoria region. The chief wine maker is the award winning Jo Nash, who has been with the winery since 2011.

Insights:
Harvesting for this vintage took place in late January 2014, which can be considered as quite early, with the harvesting and crushing during the cooler nights, which helps maintaining the grape qualities. The crest on the label refers to the Scottish MacPherson clan, originating from the Scottish Highlands and their motto: ‘Touch not a cat but a glove’; ‘Touch not the cat without a glove’. A soft reminder to its roots, from the one time violent nature of the clan to now, the tranquil business like operation of the wines, in Australia.
