Introduction
Mercurey wine is produced in the communes of Mercurey and Saint-Martin-sous-Montaigu in the Côte Chalonnaise, a subregion of Burgundy. The AOC Mercurey may be used for red and white wine, with respectively Pinot Noir and Chardonnay mostly as the main grape variety. The production of red dominates with over 80% and the AOC dates back to 1936.
Mercurey is the largest producer in this sub-region, just south from Beaune, with AOC neighbours like Givry, Rully and Bouzeron. A good entry wine for a Vin de Bourgogne, firm, solid and ageing well; a small region with quite a number of Premier Crus, but no Grand Crus.

Ready to drink, keeping it for a few years is fine. Deep colour, medium-bodied, hints spicy, cherry undertones. Serving all meaty dishes, grills, pasta, mature cheeses. Obtained in France, in general may be available in the UK. Cork.

Insights:
Within the AOC rules Mercurey is permitted to include Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc and Pinot Gris as a contributing grape, up to 15%, even though it is rarely done. Maison Chausseron produces the wine and is based in St. Jean d’Ardières, in the Beaujolais region. Another Côte de Chalonnaise distinctive wine is probably its sparkling Crémant de Bourgogne, a good and very price competitive alternative to Champagne.
