Zonin Prosecco
Glera
From the owners of the largest Prosecco vineyards in Italy
Italy, Prosecco, DOC, Brut, Zonin, NV.
Introduction
Casa Vinicola Zonin was established in 1821 and is Italy’s largest privately owned winery. Made from 100% Glera grapes and grown in the Veneto region, therefore qualifying under the Prosecco name. The family business is based in Gambellara, a small town known for wine and is approx. 40 kilometres east from Verona.
The younger generation is very much involved in the current business alongside the president Gianni Zonin, who took the reins in 1960. Since then the Zonin company has expanded continuously and the other 9 estates are all around Italy, including Sicily and a vineyard in Virginia, USA, each responsible for their production, bottling and distribution. The range of wines is extensive and Prosecco is only a part of it.

Insights:
The Prosecco is made the Charmat (tank) way, where the second fermentation takes place in a sealed tank. The wine is then filtered from the sediment under pressure, receives the ‘liqueur d’expédition’ and is bottled. The Prosecco DOC is protected and the areas of production are specified, with 5 Veneto and 4 Friuli Venezia Giulia provinces. Under Prosecco there are a few DOCG versions. In Germany the Charmat method is used often as well for their sparkling wines. With Champagne (méthode Champenoise) the second fermentation is in the bottle.
