Saint-Joseph
Syrah
A red wine from the Rhône with a long history
France, Rhône, Saint-Joseph, Réserve des Cardiniers, AOC, 2011
Introduction
Saint-Joseph, produced in the north of the Rhône region, primarily red wine, growing the Syrah grape, as defined in the AOC. It is a stretch of ca. 30+ kilometres on the western side of the Rhone river. Generally seen as a fruity wine, allowing it to drink young and ‘quite’ cold.
Some producers from other French wine regions operate in Saint-Joseph, which is not unusual throughout France. In this case Les Caves Saint Ronain, based in Nîmes, who also produces various other Rhône and Languedoc wines, such as Fitou, Corbières, Vacqueras, Rasteau and Cairanne. The narrowness of the Rhône valley limits expansions. Saint-Joseph ‘competes’ in this northern Rhône region with wines like Côte Rôtie, Croze-Hermitage and Cornas.

Insights:
Award winner, reliable wine area, even though originally the wine growing area of St. Joseph was only 6 communes and in 1969 it expanded into 26 communes, increasing the hectares tenfold, to just under 1200 hectares. According to some it has affected the quality, it being e.g. quite light. The region can only grow up to 10% of white grapes, as set under its AOC, Marsanne and Rousanne, making food-friendly whites.
