Negru de Purcari
Cabernet Sauvignon, Saperavi, Rara Neagra
To try, an excellent red wine with an intriguing blend, from Purcari in Moldova!
Moldova, Negru de Purcari, 2010
Introduction
Established in 1827 it was the first winery in Moldova (then called Bessarabia), winning various major awards from 1847 onwards. It even got mistaken for a good Bordeaux and this added to its growing reputation. In 2003 the business, Vinăria Purcari, was reinvented, rebuilding the whole former structure, its buildings and old cellars from 1827; actually becoming an attraction in the country in the process.
The wine is locally called the ‘Queen of England’ wine, as the royals order their Negru de Purcari at times, as did former international royalty. Whilst being a modern winery, the character of the wine is linked a lot to the oak fermentation and maturation, which takes place in their 5000 French oak barriques of 225 litres each and in 14 traditional 200-year old Krasnodar oak vats of 20.000 litres each.

Insights:
Historically the cellars of the Tsars looked at Moldova for their fine wines, split over the years between Russia and Romania and obtaining its independence in 1991. Most Moldovan vineyards are in central and southern Moldova, around the capital town of Chişanãu, with Purcari 120 km south-east from the town, close to the Nistru river, only 30 km from the Black Sea, in the Stefan-Voda region.
