Moulin-à-Vent
Gamay
One of the 10 Beaujolais Crus, with Gamay as its grape
France, Beaujolais, Moulin-à-Vent, AOP, 2013
Introduction
This one is under a private label and Moulin-à-Vent is one of the main regions in the Beaujolais. They are being considered the most full-bodied and longest lasting in the region, in some cases upto 10 years. Often they are aged in oak casks (fûts de chêne), usually mentioned on the label, adding even more structure and character to it than others in the Beaujolais region.
There are around 300 growers in the area, 620 ha. and producing over 4 million bottles every year. The first Moulin-à-Vent was registered in 1924 in the nearby Mâcon courts to fight counterfeits. The wine region was named after a landmark windmill in the region was registered as a historical 15th century monument in the 1930’s. Before it was called Romanèche-Thorins, after the village’s names, which is a more common practice. Now it is often referred to as King of the Crus.

The 10 Beaujolais areas are, north to south, Saint-Amour, Juliénas, Chénas, Moulin-à-Vent, Fleurie, Chiroubles, Morgon, Regnié, Côte de Brouilly, Brouilly (the largest area).
