Domaine Laurent Mabileau
Cabernet Franc
Saint Nicolas de Bourgueil AC, fruity red from the right bank of the Loire
France, Loire, Saint Nicolas de Bourgueil, Domaine Laurent Mabileau, AC, 2016
Introduction
Saint Nicolas de Bourgueil AC, fruity red from the right bank of the Loire. This red is made by the Laurent Mabileau family, who himself took the reins in 1985 and are based in the village of Saint Nicolas de Bourgueil, which itself is a World Heritage site. This estate is 28 ha. and produces under the AOC of Saint Nicolas de Bourgueil and Bourgueil. Under the 1937 AOC of Saint Nicolas de Bourgueil the grape is Cabernet Franc (locally called Breton) and one can blend upto 10% with Cabernet Sauvignon.
In their vineyard environmentally friendly practice is key. The soils are ploughed in with grass and/or compost and the vines are treated manually, such as thinning out of the leaves. The region is approx. 60 kilometres inland from the coastal towns of St. Nazaire and Nantes and runs along the Loire River. The Chinon wine area is on the other side of the river to the south and all form part of the larger Touraine region.

Insights:
In 2012 the family acquired 16 ha. of vineyards in the St. Émilion wine region, another World Heritage site, which is now being run by Antoine, Laurent’s son. Again, the same family approach in wine making with the environment in mind. The properties are Château Moulin Bellegrave, St. Émilion Grand Cru AC and Château Vieux Lavergne, St. Émilion Grand Cru AC, as well as producing a Bordeaux Supérieur from quite a small plot.
