Bourgogne Aligoté
Aligoté
Where the grape grows best and where it was recognised from the beginning in 1937, when the AOC was started for Burgundy
France, Burgundy, Bourgogne Aligoté, AOC, Antoine Barrier, 2014
Introduction
Unlike many AOC’s in Burgundy, and there are nearly 100, the Bourgogne Aligoté is a regional one, allowing it to be grown throughout Burgundy. The aligoté grape has been around in Burgundy at least since the 18th century, if not earlier.
This one is produced under the name of Antoine Barrier, bottled by Le Groupement de Producteurs de Buxy, a little town half way down in the Burgundy strip, just east from Chalon-sur-Saône. The wine comes through the large-scale distribution of the Italian CONAD and French E.Leclerc supermarket chains, with the usual group of associated growers who then produce within the Scamark guidelines.

Insights:
At times seen as ‘another’ Chardonnay; it is not and the Aligoté is getting more and more popular. In the AOC the aligoté can be blended with chardonnay up to 15% and is often blended with the Sacy grape. Traditionally the Aligoté forms the basis for a Kir, adding crème de cassis to the wine. Scamark was created in 1997, to develop and distribute private labels, with no ownership of factories, only working with specialised suppliers, who work to the broad Scamark’s specifications. A variety of white and red wines are produced under the Antoine Barrier name.
