Jasnières
Chenin Blanc
A fine dry white, just north from the mighty river Loire, from near the river Loir
France, Loire, Vallée du Loir, Domaine de La Gaudinière, Jasnières, Sec, AOC, 2016
Introduction
Jasnières is the AOC and this white is made by Domaine de la Gaudinière in the commune of L’Homme, ca. 40 km north from the town of Tours. It is grown on the slopes of Vallée du Loir and the family business has been around since 1937, now in its third generation, Claude and Danielle Cartereau. It is combined with an agricultural part of the business, with wines the latest addition.
It started with a very small vineyard plot in 1980 of 50 ares, then acquired De la Gaudiniere in 1981 and a few other moves since bring it currently to the size of just under 6 ha. 4 Ha is Jasnières AOC and the rest Coteaux du Loir AOC. Jasnières AOC is only for whites, made of Chenin grapes and was introduced in 1937. The AOC applies to the communes of L’Homme and neighbouring Ruille sur Loir, in the Sarthe department.

Insights:
Coteaux du Loir AOC applies to a fresh-light red, white and rosé and is similar in ha. size to the Jasnières AOC. For the white they use Chenin as well and for the other two Pineau d’Aunis. The Loir river (not Loire) itself is 317 km long, runs for a while alongside the Loire, joins the River Sarthe, which flows into the Loire further up south at the town of Angers. The Touraine wine area is just south of Jasnières and Coteaux du Loir.
