Château Bélingard
Semillon, Sauvignon, Muscadelle
Monbazillac AC, fine white dessert wine from the Dordogne
France, Monbazillac, Château Bélingard, Monbazillac Réserve, 2013
Introduction
Château Bélingard is the maker of this one and based in the centre of the Monbazillac wine region, which is just south of the town of Bergerac. The Château has been around since the 1820’s. Now several generations later, since the 1980’s, Laurent and Sylvie de Bosredon manage the estate in Pomport within the family spirit. The Château represents since 1936 the AOC’s of Bergerac, Côtes de Bergerac and Monbazillac.
This award winning Monbazillac is made from a selection of handpicked grapes. The over-matured grapes (Nobel Rot - Botrytis Cinerea) are harvested between October and the beginning of November. Traditional production follows and once the balance is reached in alcohol and sugar, maturation takes place either in tanks or barrels. For the production of their whites and reds they have these days a state of the art operation. It has become all together a flagship estate in Bergerac.

Insights:
Noble Rot is the beneficial form of a grey fungus, Botrytis Cinerea, affecting the wine grape. Infestation by Botrytis needs moist conditions, however if the weather stays wet the damaging type (‘grey rot’) can destroy the crops. Grapes get usually infected with Botrytis when they are ripe. If they are then exposed to drier conditions and become partially raisined, it is known as Noble Rot. Then the moment of harvest is key to be able to make the fine and concentrated sweet wines (called Botrytized wines).
