Chianti Colli Senesi
Sangiovese
DOCG, Chianti with a capital C, by winery Guicciardini Strozzi near the town of San Gimignano
Italy, Chianti, Colli Senesi, Titolato Strozzi, Tenute Guicciardini Strozzi, DOCG, 2015

Introduction
Colli Senesi is a sub-region of Chianti and seen as outstanding among Chianti’s, especially from the hills around San Gimignano. This Chianti is from the Tenute (estates) Guicciardini Strozzi. It is made from Sangiovese grapes and all from the Tenuta di Cusona estate.

Chianti can at times be blended within the DOCG regulation. This is then done with a small proportion of other often local varieties, such as Canaiolo, Colorino and Mammolo, to enrich the end result.

The business has been around a long time with the first known activities at the Cusona estate in 994. These days it spreads over 530 hectares in the Tuscan hills near San Gimignano and is currently run by Girolama Strozzi.

The Guicciardini Strozzi names originate from two originally well known families. They were brought together by marriage, each with a very long and colourful history. The estate became more internationally commercial in the 1970’s and now produces 22 varieties of wine.

Insights:
One (other) particular wine, Vernaccia di San Gimignano, is among the most renowned labels from this winery. It is a white wine made from the vernaccia grape, first produced in 1200. The winery has extended its interest since 1998 further. To the west in Maremma and on Pantelleria, an island in the far south, in the Strait of Sicily. They produce also sparkling wine, grappa and olive oil.

‘Titolato’ stands for ‘having a noble title’; in this case Prince Girolama Strozzi. One other of the amazing facts: the current family is the 15th generation of descendants of Mona Lisa. DOCG – Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita (highest rating, a step up from DOC)
