Chinon
Cabernet Franc
Central Loire wine region and this is Chinon, not white, but a good red
France, Loire, Chinon, La Petite Chapelle, Cabernet Franc, Chinon AC, 2014
Introduction
The Chinon region with its own AOC, is named after the historic town of Chinon. With the neighbouring areas of Bourgueil and St-Nicolas-de-Bourgeuil they are known for their pleasant reds, often ready to drink. Cabernet Franc forms usually the basis, with an AOC allowance of 10% for cabernet sauvignon and serving it cool is preferred within a few months of the vintage. Within Loire this wine area is also referred to as part of Touraine.
With the Loire being known for its whites, the reds are often overseen, are good value and are regularly underrated. The little white they make in Chinon tends to be made from Chenin Blanc and they produce a bit of rosé. This red is made by Domaine Jourdan in Cravant-les-Coteaux. The 17 ha. winery has been around for the five generations of the Pichard family. It was taken over in 2012 by Annick and Francis Jourdan, though still working with Philippe Pichard. They have also various wines under their own label since.

Insights:
Domaine Jourdan is a Vigneron Indépendant and the wines are ‘biologique’, bio dynamic farming, supported by the European certification. The vines are between 15-30 years old, all cabernet franc. For some of their wines they use oak vats for ageing. In The town of Chinon is actually an Unesco World Heritage site, with the river Vienne running through the southern part of the Chinon region and bordered on the north by the Loire itself.
