Domaine de la Charmoise
Gamay
Red wine from the centre of the Loire region, in Touraine
France, Loire, Touraine, Domaine de la Charmoise, Terroirs des Silices, Gamay, Touraine AOC, 2015

Introduction
Made from the Gamay grape, by Domaine de la Charmoise, owned by the Marionnet family, Henri and son Jean-Sébastien. They are based in Soings-en-Sologne, 30 kilometres south of Blois; the eastern part of the Touraine AOC. Mid-twentieth century they started and in the 60-70’s they replanted and extended their estate, now producing around 400 thousand bottles annually, from 60 hectares.

The estate grows mainly Gamay for the red and Sauvignon for the white, with the river Loire to the north and the river Cher to the south. The department is actually called Loir-et-Cher. The Touraine AOC, awarded in 1939, stands for a large area, with 70 communes in it, of which a number have their own AOC. Some of these are Bourgueil, Vouvray, Montlouis and Chinon.

Insights:
The family has been producing some wine as well from ungrafted vines, of which they have a few hectares, such as côt (=Malbec) and cabernet sauvignon. The label states ‘Terroirs des Silices’, ‘Soil of Silicas’; Silica is the earth’s most abundant mineral, finding it in quartz, sand and glass. The soil of the estate is one of flint clay and gravel (and silica), called ‘perruche sol’, which is typical for the region.
