Italy, Salice Salentino DOC, Castellani, 2011

Introduction
Part of Salento, name of the southern part of Puglia, home to a wide range of Italian wines. Salice Salentino is made of the Negroamaro and 10% of the Malvasia Nera grapes, a usual blend in the region. The wine is produced by Castellani, wine producer from the more northern Italian region of Tuscany, where the family has produced wines for over 150 years.
.
Castellani was officially registered in 1903 in Pisa and over the years, with many ups and downs, the family now owns 6 estates in Tuscany, each with their own winery facilities. The Salice Salentino is bottled in their Santa Lucia estate. In Tuscany the family produces through its estates many varieties of wines, including their own estate wines, Chianti, Italian varietals and regional ones.

Insights:
Puglia (also called Apulia) as a region has 25 DOC’s, Salice Salentino is one of them. Salento and its trees create the name (salice – willow). Only 2% of the regions wine meets DOC standards. Puglia’s reds are often connected to the Primitivo grape (Zinfandel). Puglia has seen a lot of investment over the last few years. Individual labels come through, even though the region still produces often wines to blend the wines from the north.
