Visan
Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre
Visan, by Domaine Val Joachim, Côte du Rhône Village with a good and ever improving reputation.
France, Rhône, Visan, Côte du Rhône Villages AC, Domaine Val Joachim, 2011

Introduction
A step up from the ‘normal’ Côte de Rhône wines; this is village specific, similar to Sablét, Séguret, Cairanne and 14 others. A classification guarantee, offering often very good value among the French wines. The villages centre around the town of Orange, south-east France, producing mostly red wine, with some rosé and white.

It is a small village of only approx. 2000 inhabitants, very typical for this area. The appellation for Villages states a minimum of 50% is Grenache, together with a minimum of 20% Syrah and/or Mourvèdre and that upto 20% other permitted varieties are allowed, with a minimum strength of 12.5% vol. Vineyards are 390 hectares, considered medium-sized among the others and producing 16.000+ hl. The Domaine is owned by the Perez family, based just outside the village itself.

Insights:
The AOC started 1966-67 and the other 14 villages are: Rousset-les-Vignes, Saint Pantaléons les Vignes, Valréas, Saint-Maurice, Rochegude, Roaix, Saint-Gervais, Chusclan, Laudun, Massif d’Uchau, Plan de Dieu, Puyméras, Signargues and, since 2012, Gadagne. Some villages are a further step up, with just their own names and not mentioning Côte du Rhône Villages, such as Gigondas, Rasteau and Vacqueras.
