Rhône village that is more and more recognised for its good and reliable wine
France, Rhône, Rasteau, AOC, Domaine de la Combe Dieu, 2015

Introduction
This Rasteau, Domaine de la Combe Dieu, is from the Saurel family, currently Agnes Saurel, who have been growing wines for three generations. 50 Hectares of Village AOC vines and scoring well over the years. Rasteau is in the heart of the Rhône region, ca. 20 km to the north east of the town of Orange, surrounded by the other Villages, such as Vacqueras, Gigondas and Beaume de Venise.

The family originates from the nearby Gigondas, growing wines and grandfather bought Domaine de la Combe Dieu (‘God’s Country’) in 1966 for one of his sons, to give the inheritance more content among his sons. At the time 10 hectares of old vines and a forest. The surrounding woodland was used to extend the vineyard, growing these days Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre and old Carignan vines. In 1982 their own winery facilities were added, which were done until then at the Gigondas family winery. Many of the family are still into winemaking.

Insights:
The Domaine falls under ‘Domaine et Chateau’, a marketing cooperation of properties, spread over The Rhône and Bordeaux region, representing a large variety of wine and forming part of a larger offering of international wines, coordinated by Origin Wines UK. Rasteau has its own AOC since 2009 (and for its sweet fortified wines – Vin Doux Naturel - since 1945) and is on a level with others that have their own Village AOC, unlike other villages that need to mention the Côtes du Rhône Village AOC (and the village name), being a ‘step down’, but still good wines. Exciting region, with a growing interest in their (variety of) wine and still affordable.
